Recent Romani arrivals
Those Roma usually referred to as ‘recent arrivals’ generally come from the Balkans and arrived as fugitives during the past 20 years. Some groups have found it easy to settle in Sweden while for others it has been more difficult. In recent years Roma have arrived from EU countries and – thanks to unrestricted movement – have been able to seek work and income here. They generally live outside society since it proves very difficult for most of them to find jobs and housing. Their situation is characterised by homelessness and poverty.

Nowadays Roma come to Sweden seeking asylum from persecution and discrimination. Others come to work to earn money to survive back at home.
